In line with the passion of RETA foundation for promoting girl child education across the communities in Ghana, RETA foundation embarked on a project some months ago on “menstrual hygiene & health education” to improve girl child education and also a key to nurturing confident girls .
we visited some selected schools ,from upper primary to junior level in Atebubu in the Bono-East Region of Ghana, to give free proper and deep lecture on menstrual hygiene to the girls of the school with the help of public Health Educators and also demonstrated how to use sanitary towels, proper and hygienic ways of disposing sanitary towels.
It is non arguably a necessary move to enlighten girl child’s on menstrual hygiene as they cross from the age of 8 to the age of 10 and above because a lot of this girl child’s have little or no knowledge on what menstrual cycle is all about.
According a research, brief on menstrual hygiene by United Nation in 2016 95% of girls in Ghana sometimes miss school due to lack of facilities, traditional beliefs that menstruating women are unclean, discomfort and pain, they as well face the risk of being teased.
The overall objective of the project is to provide needs to give lectures to girls on menstrual hygiene and also attend to questions and at the same time give medical advice through medical professionals which will be made available.
