I am a graduate student at East Tennessee State University. I took a crime and deviance class this fall and our discussions about the prison system in the United States led me to investigate how it is back home. On the course of my research, I came across a couple of videos about the plight of prisoners in Ghana, after which I decided to launch this campaign to help inmates at Ghanaian prisons.
There is an overcrowding rate of 46.5% in Ghanaian prisons leading to heat strokes and the spread of contagious diseases among inmates. Due to poverty and low education, some inmates who could not afford lawyers, defend themselves nor pay fines for petty crimes have ended up behind bars. I must say that many individuals and organizations in Ghana donate food supplies to the prisons but there has been a neglect on the infrastructural problems and prisoners who are in jail due to poverty.
Donations to this cause will help:
Free prisoners (male and female) who have been sentenced to 3-5 years because they could not pay fines($400 and below) for petty offences to enjoy the Christmas festivities with their family.
Help meet the 2000 wall mount fan project for prisoners to reduce the spread of diseases due to heat and congestion.
I plan to send funds raised before December to the Crime Check Foundation http://crimecheckfoundation.org/project.html Hopefully I will be in Ghana next summer and will be able to work on these projects if you fund me.
